They are essentially the same thing. Some throws are basically useless in competitive setting. Mostly it has helped me prepare for non competition defense.
But are great for understanding certain body mechanics and whatnot. The randori no kata, and it’s accompanying ura forms have been tremendously useful in informing the precision and crispness with with I execute many techniques, as well as reinforcing and informing a sense of positional awareness, which helps make all my techniques work.
I’d say your Judo becomes more Judo during Kata than Randori or any other form of practice. The guiding principles of Judo are making the best use of one’s physical and mental powers as well as mutual welfare.
Which i’ll be grading for in 10 days. So, I’ve trained in nage, katame, nage ura, katame ura, goshin, go, and itsutsu, as well as some non-Japanese kata, namely the rensa and hikomi no kata, having been tested on the first five.

I find it interesting that all Judoka initially learn their techniques through very simple kata, but somehow cannot make the transition to the more complex named kata. Log in or sign up in seconds. Are you katamd in these styles? The world is more than just a 10m square covered with tatami. I feel that it has significantly improved my ground game and the throwing practice is good.
